Originally a steep-sided lake created by a stranded chunk of Wisconsonian glacier, Volo Bog is an odd beauty. Beneath the frozen surface teeming broods of tadpoles wiggled. The Nature Conservancy purchased the bog in 1958 and transferred ownership to the University of Illinois. In 1970 the bog was transferred to the ILDNR, which purchased surrounding lands that nourish the bog. The subtle winter pallette offered a few splashes of color. Go there.
