When Chicago Park District workers neglected to groom Montrose Beach's east end a dormant ecosystem awakened. One of the rarest globally, the freshwater panne is a low, narrow wetland between two elevated features. In other words, lovely. Two of the globe's less than 500 acres are here. A treasure in our city.
